Monica Topping

Monica moved to Humboldt County in high school and the only thing missing from making this place as awesome as she wanted it to be, was KSLG, which didn't happen for a few more years.

It sounds cliche, but Monica's life pretty much revolves around music. When she's not on the air on KSLG, she's interviewing and writing about bands for her website, Radio Radio Radio, making jewelry for Rock Chick Designs out of used guitar strings, cassette tapes and vinyl records (repurposing comes before recycling!), and staying out entirely past her bedtime, multiple nights a week, going to shows and taking pictures, which you can see here on kslg.com

Monica graduated from Humboldt State University in 2009 -- at almost 29 years old -- with her Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, but has been working in radio since she was 22 and writing for local publications since she was 17. Thankfully, she was too stubborn to accept being told she couldn't do any of that without a degree.

She can be reached via e-mail at monica@kslg.com, and on Twitter @RockChickDesign.

Monica's new ink, by Lydia at Ancient ArtsMy  new Sisters tattoo, done by Lydia at Ancient Arts in Arcata. Both of my younger sisters either have, or are getting, the infinity symbol with the hearts, but I customized mine with their birthstone colors. The ladybug is also a common theme throughout my immediate family's tattoos, and the treble clef is, well, me.

On May 8, 2010, Bret Bailey (of The Common Vice and formerly Que La Chinga) played on Monica's show, in anticipation of The Solitary Men's (a Neil Diamond tribute) debut show at Nocturnum that night. Here is audio from the interview and three songs: 1) Solitary Man, 2) Shilo, 3) Cherry Cherry.

Martian Bishop and Rico of Eyes Anonymous came into the KSLG studio to play a couple of songs as a sort of Rutabaga Ball preview, on Saturday, May 22, 2010. Rutabaga Royalty (Queens and Princesses of the Kinetic Grand Championship) love Eyes Anonymous, and Eyes Anonymous appear to love them back. For the Glory!

Here's their performance, which included three songs: 1) Flock of Seagulls - I Ran, 2) Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over, 3) Billy Idol - White Wedding
