New Cage the Elephant due out 1/11/11

KSLG faves Cage the Elephant release their highly anticipated sophomore album "Thank You, Happy Birthday" on Jan. 11, 2011. Spinner has the scoop.

More happy birthdays from KSLG!

Because we figure the folks born around the upcoming holiday might not get enough pure birthday love, happy belated (Dec. 18) to McK-based rocker photog Chris Tuite! (Remember, we raved about him during Outside Lands?) Also, happy upcoming (Dec. 20) to all-around mindblowingly talented Arcata artist, kinetic and otherwise, Lush Newton! See her work at the Art Center, Luke's Joint and wherever coolness abounds.

Winter solstice and total lunar eclipse

Moon over Humboldt

Who needs Google when Humboldt County's bloggers are so well-informed? In addition to that whole holidays thing, Winter Solstice lands this week. And not just Solstice! Read on...

(Photo from KymK's blog.)

From Ernie's blog:

"To the people out there that are guided by the moon, like maybe werewolves, December 21st is going to be a big night for you! Not only is the Earth going to eclipse the Moon, it's going to happen on the winter solstice. Not only is the lunar eclipse going to happen on the solstice, the center of the eclipse will happen almost directly over us. So, the moon will be in full eclipse for quite some time.

"Totality should last 72 minutes. Winter solstice happens at 3:38 pm Pacific Time. That's when Fall turns to Winter. Fall turning to Winter is a subtle difference for Humboldters. We only have two seasons here, dust and mud, and we have long been in mud season.

"An eclipse hasn't happened on the winter solstice in 456 years. As you can guess, it is a very rare event. What's even more rare is that we would see anything in the night sky in December. So, if I were you, I wouldn't ever get out of bed to look."

(December 21 is also the birthday of Seven-O-Heaven creator, one-time radio intern and occasional guest host Andrew Goff. Happy 28th from KSLG!)
